Annual spring golf vacation this year included a trip to see a practice round at the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.Weather was perfect. Course was fabulous. Manicured perfectly. Azaleas were in full bloom and magnificent. You have to see 1600 azaleas in bloom to believe it. The whole left side of the fairway and behind the green of Hole no 13 was azaleas. It is estimated that more than 80,000 plants of over 350 varieties have been added to the landscape of this golf course.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164464062256782814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638227337599315367.post-12138459005352822102018-04-01T12:40:00.000-04:002018-04-18T15:38:24.822-04:00Golf Season Starts

New year, new golf sketches. Golf vacation in Santee, South Carolina. Santee Cooper was one of the four courses we played. The Players Course at Wyboo was another of the courses.

Spring officially begins March 20, but for me the month of April says spring. It also says golf season, our annual golf vacation is in April. For the next 6 months or so, I play golf when I can and I sketch golf holes. I started in Spring of 2016 and am now in my third dedicated golf sketchbook. I am going to continue with this obsession of sketching every golf hole I play. By the end of 2017 golf season I had reached 720 golf holes, ranging from Ontario to Arizona. These quick sketches, some completed on location, most completed from photo reference later, are so loose and free. I like them better than most finished pieces of artwork that I do!

So you ask, why save an old building? When I look at historic architecture, I see the authentic craftsmanship, the beautiful façades, the character, culture and charm from days gone by. I imagine the stories of the people who lived and worked there. I feel the creative energy within the walls. I believe each and every old building has a soul and she deserves to be saved. Once an old building is destroyed, she is lost forever.
March 1, winter is far from over, but the last couple of days have felt like spring! I have been walking the dog wearing a light jacket. I keep reminding myself winter is not over, keep your winter coat, hat, and mitts close at hand. I like winter, seriously, I like how clean a blanket of snow looks, a light snow falling is beautiful, I like the change of seasons, the contrast of white with the blue of the sky, etc When there is snow outside, I enjoy painting snow, but as soon as there is the slightest hint of spring, I want no part of snow in my illustrations. I did this illustration ‘Museum London Winter’ last week, to be used as the title page in a presentation to the Museum London Tour Guides. Then Monday when we make our presentation, its 12 degrees and sunny! Now that I have tasted spring weather, I am ready for golf season and no more snow.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164464062256782814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638227337599315367.post-5462735501729924932017-05-31T14:01:00.000-04:002017-05-31T14:01:16.999-04:00Social Media

Desert golf vacation in Arizona! Such unique landscape: desert, cactus, mountains, fairways and greens. Played 6 courses in 6 days. This was Wildfire Golf Course, Arnold Palmer Signature Course. Some drawn on location and some drawn from images taken with IPAD. Not quite finishing adding the watercolour yet. 108 holes is allot of sketching!

Stayed within a block of Old Scottsdale, so were able visit Scottsdale's Museum of the West and see the exhibition: The Taos Society of Artists (They shared a love of the regional location, local color and local people, especially the Hispanic and Pueblo Native American communities. Their paintings were characterized by dramatic landscapes, brilliant lighting, indigenous peoples and modernist techniques. The group’s groundbreaking artworks gave rise to a major school of American painting.)

I plan to add some architectural details and then I will give it a day to dry completely before I add watercolour. I have tried to rush it before and ended up with ink bleeding into the colours.
My new custom handmade sketchbook. Thank you Jan Taylor. Interior pages are 140 lb Arches hot pressed watercolour paper alternated with coloured pastel paper. Some pages fold out, which will be great for drawing streetscapes. Planning to try it out on my upcoming holiday.

i spent a great afternoon at the Figure Drawing Session (The ARTS Project) on Tuesday. Laura was excellent model, interesting poses, and she held them well. I did a number of small line drawings that will be add some colour to later today.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164464062256782814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638227337599315367.post-66517940198507644892017-02-20T14:51:00.004-05:002017-02-20T14:51:47.748-05:00Figure Drawing

This home portrait is now in Ottawa, Ontario, framed and hanging in the hallway. The challenge with this one was that there was a tree right in front of the house, so in order to draw the home, I had to flip back and forth between a number of views. The pattern and colour of the brickwork on this mid-century modern home was interesting but also very challenging.

For home commissions, the size that I typically work is about 4 x 6 inches or smaller with matt size being 8 x 10 inches. The standard size makes framing easy and allows the customer to choose their own style. I can work from photos, but I need good quality and a variety of views. I really prefer to visit in person, but that is not always an option. More samples of home commissions on my website.
Portrait of Carly. This is how I see Carly - fun, friendly, happy, alert, a lovely little dog. The challenge was: they already had a "traditional" acrylic painting of this cutie. So I needed something completely different, I choose a sketchy, playful, loose style.Cherylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07164464062256782814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8638227337599315367.post-43580712625260058522016-12-18T09:30:00.000-05:002016-12-18T09:30:24.600-05:00We-Ko-Pa Golf
